Kotaku is reporting that the game has already broken not one but two crowdfunding records, after being live for less than single day. Developer Yu Suzuki announced that it would be launched through a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter - and the response has been wild. At a Sony press conference on Tuesday, Shenmue III was finally announced, 14 years after its predecessor. Though the games are considered cult classics, no follow-up was ever released. Shenmue I was released on the Dreamcast on 1999, and Shenmue II followed up two years later in 2001. The game is a sequel to the previous Shenmue titles, which were open-world adventure games. The newly launched crowdfunding campaign for forthcoming game Shenmue III has already been wildly successful, Motherboard reports - so successful it actually managed to break crowdfunding website Kickstarter. It’s been Kickstarter backed, with 69,320 backers pledging 6,333,295 towards the project.

I have to say too that I wasn't so bothered with the new gen of consoles, but with The Last Guardian and of course especially Shenmue 3, I will definitely be in for a PS4 in time.A promotional image from the Kickstarter campaign. Shenmue 3 was announced at Sony’s PlayStation event during E3 2015. I was very lucky, as I got to play them back to back, going immediately into number 2 off the back of a magic Christmas with the first. So for me, I love the first game so very much, but the second one completely sealed the deal. Who can forget training with the old man by the blossom tree? The music really soared even more too, and imho had way, way more memorable pieces. And yet the romance of the surroundings wasn't lost, and many of the people you did meet were very special indeed. Ryo wasn't necessarily going to find easy help or friendly people here. While I love inhabiting Yokosuke, there was just that perfectly managed mysterious and almost unwelcoming feeling of being in China that burned itself into my little gamer's heart. I played both on DC back in the day, and ended up loving the second game even more than the first.

Series creator Yu Suzuki later noted that.

Shenmue III's Kickstarter was revealed during Sony's E3 press conference, and its goal was quickly met.

Secondly, the digital only release on PS4 suggests that it may be a Network title, which means a significantly reduced budget to not be a boxed title (Theoretically its a major triple A title, why no boxed release?) Also, Sega still have the Shenmue trademark as far as I'm aware, because they renewed it in 2014- So I'm assuming this is being made under licence from Sega, despite them having no involvement in the development (That won't be cheap)įinancially, there's something else going on here, and I'm not sure what it is, but I'm loathed to place money on the kickstarter until its more transparent what the game will actually be and where it's going (If it was a Sony Exclusive, I'd assuming they were subbing it, but with it coming to pc I'm not so sure) Shenmue III - Lake of the Lantern Bugs Trailer. I have a few alarm bells ringing here- One a sequel to the most expensive game of its era that cost somewhere between 50-70 million dollars back in 2000, is expecting to made for $2 million, something doesn't add up- A proper shenmue sequel can't be a continuation of what was before, they were amazing and groundbreaking in their day, but are severely dated now, keep that structure and you've failed before you start.
